Nirmal Chandra Kumar's contributions to D. K. Gupta

In fact Dilip Kumar Gupta and Nirmal Chandra Kumar was exactly of the same age, separated by a couple of months. D K Gupta visited the library of Kumar. But he was specific. He preferred being all alone with no disturbances. Which meant that he did not come to join the 'adda' session. The subject discussed was The Art of The Book : Cover Design, Binding, Typography, Uncut Pages, Spines, End Paper (Pustini) , Book Cases. All related to Books. He loved Books and smelt them when my Kumar handed it to him. Many a times when he found the book of a very high standard in production he touched it to his head in obeisance.

D K Gupta founded the publishing house Signet Press in 1943. The famed film-director Satyajit Ray worked as a visual designer in this publishing house at the onset of his career and many of the books don the covers designed by him. The press has published many renowned books like Jawaharlal Nehru's Discovery of India, Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay's Pather Panchali, Jibanananda Das's Rupasi Bangla, Saat-ti taarar timir etc. It was Dilip Kumar Gupta, owner of Signet Press that brought out limited edition Bengali Books.

Dilip Gupta, popularly known as DK, was crazy about books. He had his own ideas of how it should be printed, which illustrations were to adorn the book and even the particular illustrator. Needless to say, DK encouraged publication of new books.
