Prof. Aloke Kumar is an accomplished communications professor, author, editor, cultural critic and essayist. An eclectic thinker, combining elements of Indian idealism, Romanticism and Mythology. Kumar has made enduring and influential contributions to communication, aesthetic theory, literary criticism and historical narrative.
Having been brought up amidst a large collection of books, maps and prints at home on diverse subjects and inheriting them, as his father was an antiquarian; he has been pursuing original research from his teens and has got a natural flair for many subjects, on which he writes extensively.
He is an Associate Professor IIM C and a Faculty Member at the University of Calcutta, in the Department of Journalism & Mass Communications. He teaches Media, Advertising, Marketing, Corporate Communication, Public Relations, Semiotics, Deconstruction and others.
He is also a Visiting Lecturer at, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Ahmedabad and holds affiliate faculty positions in various Universities, among them are the Institute of Mass Communications, New Delhi, and National University of Singapore.
Before crossing over to academics Professor Aloke Kumar was in the corporate, having worked in Rediffusion Advertising, where he was involved in many important campaigns, including the first political campaign in India. He joined the ABP Group to be part of a team to launch The Telegraph and was there for fifteen years. Professor Kumar has brought many a projects to life, including BusinessWorld and Sananda Magazine. Professor Kumar is an industry veteran who oversaw the design, creation and improvement of all of Anandabazar’s products, from consumer offerings to publication and business services.
He was also involved with the creation of ‘Swabhumi’ the Heritage Park for Gujarat Ambuja. His pioneering work with the internet as a communication medium led to the development of one of the first commercially deployed online internet service for consumers for Usha Martin Internet.
He has edited and written many books on art and has curated exhibitions. Professor Kumar is renowned for authoring several noteworthy works. As a prolific contributor, he has authored over 3000 articles on diverse topics ranging from Anthropology to Anthropomorphism, from Deconstruction to Dadaism.
In addition, he is an acclaimed fellow, a past Rolex Protégé Award Juror, and the recipient of several prestigious awards.
