Jamini Roy created several paintings and drawings on the Life of Jesus. This painting is of the Three Magi. The biblical Magi also referred to as the Three Wise Men or Three Kings were distinguished foreigners in the Gospel of Matthew and Christian tradition. They are said to have visited Jesus after his birth, bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They are regular figures in traditional accounts of the nativity celebrations of Christmas and are an important part of Christian tradition. In this painting the Three Magi is shown in a beautiful brown body with only two strokes of white to indicate their garb. The background is flat and contrasting, bringing the three figures into prominence. Their stature is also indicated in the proportion of the bodies, where their face and the upper half are more prominent in comparison.
